I was struck forcibly by the sentence in the speech ofFrancisco J.H.da Silva about the present struggle: "it's not only about work but about the shape of the world we pass on."

A Câmara Municipal de Santos não pode assistir passivamente a asfixia da cidade, fruto da aplicação imperfeita de uma lei criada para melhorar o desemprenho portuário que, inexplicavelmente, deixa de priorizar a segurança do trabalhador e promove a sua exclusão do processo de produção.
Sem trabalho não existe progresso e a cidade se esvazia economiacamente e morre. Santos está morrendo!
A solidariedade do Poder Legislativo Municipal ao movimento dos Estivadores é um manifesto de repúdio ā falta de diálogo e ā prepotência com que pretende impor uma legislação que desconsidera, de maneira reprovável, relações de trabalho vigentes há 70 anos no porto de Santos.
Conclamamos o Governador do Estado, o Presidente da República e o Poder Juduciário para que se restabeleça o diálogo e que o cumprimento da Lei contemple patrões e trabalhadores de maneira igualitária, equitativa e harmônica, como dispõe a Constituição da República.

When the Military Police storm through Santos and throw bombs at stevedores, they do not imagine any consequences in Barcelona, San Francisco, Seoul, Seattle or Quebec. When Brazilian industrialists prepare to use another port while encouraging the State authorities to crush you, they do not think that Volkswagen workers around the world will even hear about it.

They accuse you of living in the past. But they are the ones who have not woken up to the 21st century, in which the entire world is interlinked, and an injury to one really is an injury to all.

It is with great concern that we hear of the Courts decision to hand over the hire and allocation of dockwork to private services. Once again we see the rights of the workers being oppressed by Multi-National Shipping Companies, Port Employers and Government.

Union busting activities are being exploited by Port Authorities across the world as the employer seeks to maximize profit at the expense of working people.

No doubt the complex forces of global capitalism are behind the attack on the Santos Port & Dockworkers, therefore the International Dockers and Longshoremen's Movement must not let them stand alone.

The sacked Liverpool Dockworkers and their Families send their solidarity and support to their fellow workers in the Port of Santos and express their deep concern regarding the threatened privatisation program.

We will do everything in our power to support and publicise your fight.
The next mass meeting of the Liverpool Docworkers will take place in 3 weeks time, when a full report on your situation will given.

Quero manifestar o nosso apoio e solidariedade aos estivadores, uma categoria que sempre foi responsável direta pela geração de riquezas para o país, através de seu suor e determinação, e vêm sendo espoliados em seus direitos há quase uma década, seja pela redução crescente de postos de trabalho, seja pela drástica diminuição de seus ganhos, o que gerou uma crise social sem precedentes, envolvendo não só as milhares de famílias de portuários, mas toda a economia da região da Baixada Santista, que tinha no porto santista a sua maior fonte de emprego e geração de renda.
São estes mesmos estivadores que, mais uma vez, neste momento, estão tendo sua honra e dignidade afrontadas pela decisão autoritária que transfere a escalação dos trabalhadores para as funções da estiva no porto, atividade efetuada durante cerca de 70 anos pelo sindicato da categoria, para um órgão dominado pelas empresas privadas que arrendaram os terminais portuários, o Órgão Gestor de Mão-de-Obra (OGMO).

El motivo de la presente es para comunicarle mi preocupación, y la de todos los estibadores espaņoles a quienes represento, por el conflicto por el que los compaņeros estibadores de Santos estáis pasando.

Aņos atrás, concretamente en 1947, vosotros, los estibadores de Santos os solidarizasteis con nosotros, realizando una huelga de solidaridad y apoyo a todos los estibadores espaņoles. Ahora somos nosotros quienes os apoyamos y nos solidarizamos con vosotros, para intentar paliar este gran conflicto.

Como también, coordinador general del Consejo Internacional de Estibadores (IDC) reciban mi más sincero apoyo y solidaridad.

Os trabalhadores do Porto de Santos de Santos, estivadores ou não, já deram sua contribuição ao processo de modernização, em parcela muito maior que os demais agentes sociais. Cederam 45 % de sua renda nos últimos seis anos. Chega. E preciso encontrar meios democraticos de romper o impasse. Basta de violência desnecessária, estúpida e sem sentido. Justiça e paz para o porto e seus trabalhadores.
